There is now a substantial body of science indicating an unprecedented rate of global climate change, notably considered to be largely anthropogenic in origin. There are predictions of further climate-induced changes that demand urgent attention and action. Already we are seeing effects attributable to climate change across a range of biodiversity. Much research has focused on describing phenological responses, identifying impacts, and predicting future consequences under different climate scenarios. There is increasing interest in adaptation and mitigation strategies which present their own challenges and potential consequences for birds and other biodiversity.

This conference will provide a topical update on the research into climate change, notably with respect to birds. The 2010 BOU conference, Climate change and birds, follows those on Climate Change and Coastal Birds in 2002, and on Renewable Energy and Birds in 2005 and will bring together and update aspects of both topics as well as covering a wider brief. It will include terrestrial and marine environments, provide an update on the impacts of climate change and of mitigation measures, and consider adaptation strategies, including those for the network of protected sites. The scope is international.

The conference is aimed at research and conservation organisations as well as statutory government agencies, and those engaged in policy and advocacy.
